Laredo ISD Celebrates Community Support and Student Achievements at Back to School Convocation

The Laredo Independent School District (LISD) held its regular board meeting on August 14, 2025, where several key recognitions and acknowledgments took place, highlighting community support and student achievements.

The meeting commenced with a warm acknowledgment of KGNS TV for sponsoring the fourth annual back-to-school supplies drive, which successfully provided hundreds of school supplies to students. Scott Payne, a representative from KGNS, was present to accept the recognition, underscoring the station's ongoing support for LISD initiatives, including the Teacher of the Month program and the eighth grader of the month awards.

Following this, the board recognized the Bayes Law Firm, represented by Joey and Angie Thais, for their generous contributions to the same initiatives. Their commitment to supporting outstanding teachers and addressing the needs of underprivileged children was commended.

The meeting also included expressions of gratitude towards various LISD departments, including the instructional television, fine arts, health and safety, police, transportation, and performing arts center staff. Their collaborative efforts during the recent back-to-school convocation and health fair were acknowledged as instrumental in making the events successful.

In a celebratory tone, the board highlighted the achievements of JC Martin Elementary School student Ryan Garcia, who was recently named the US Open World Champion in Continuous Sparring at a major martial arts tournament in Orlando, Florida. Ryan's accomplishments in various competitions were celebrated, and he was invited to the stage alongside his principal, Amy Cruz.

Lastly, the board congratulated Cindy Lopez, the LISD substance abuse coordinator, for receiving the 2025 Nuestro Orgullo award in the professional category from the Webb County Community Coalition of SCAN. Her contributions to the district were recognized as a source of pride for LISD.

The meeting concluded with a sense of community spirit and appreciation for the collaborative efforts that support LISD students and staff, setting a positive tone for the upcoming school year.
