Commissioners Discuss Safety Hazards of Parallel Parking Plan on Martin Drive

Concerns over safety and traffic flow dominated the recent Bedford Planning & Zoning Commission meeting as discussions unfolded regarding a proposed training school at 2901 Martin Drive. The proposal includes a parallel parking component situated between two entrances on Harwood Road, raising alarms among commissioners and community members alike.

During the meeting, staff highlighted that five property owners were notified about the proposal, but no responses were received. The training school is classified as a typical retail use, and no exterior modifications to the building are planned. However, the introduction of parallel parking in a small lot at a busy intersection has sparked significant concern.

Commissioner Jacobson voiced apprehension about the safety implications of the parallel parking, particularly given the proximity to two schools. "This is an extremely busy intersection... the parallel parking would involve a 90-degree path across in front of both of those entrances," he noted, emphasizing the potential hazards for drivers and pedestrians alike.

The applicant, MD Rahman, acknowledged the tight parking situation and the busy nature of the area, which includes heavy foot traffic from schoolchildren. Commissioners questioned whether alternative parking solutions could be explored to mitigate safety risks.
