Celico Workforce Board Enhances Job Opportunities in Southeast Los Angeles County

In a vibrant meeting room filled with the energy of community leaders and policymakers, the California State Assembly's Committee on Economic Development, Growth, and Household Impact convened to address pressing economic challenges facing families in the region. The spotlight turned to Sandra Michel, Deputy Director of the South East Los Angeles County Workforce Development Board, known as Celico, who passionately outlined the board's mission and achievements.

Representing eight cities, including Bellflower and Lakewood, Celico is dedicated to ensuring that residents have access to quality jobs that offer competitive wages and opportunities for growth. Michel emphasized the board's commitment to aligning employers, educators, and training providers in high-demand industries, focusing on sectors such as advanced manufacturing, healthcare, and skilled trades. "We hear firsthand from job seekers about the economic pressures straining their households," she noted, highlighting the burdens of rising housing costs, transportation expenses, and childcare.

In the past year, Celico has successfully placed over 800 residents into jobs averaging more than $26 an hour and enrolled hundreds in training programs that lead to industry-recognized credentials. Michel underscored the importance of wraparound support services, which include assistance with transportation and childcare, to help individuals not only secure jobs but also thrive in their careers.

The discussion also touched on the interconnectedness of various societal issues, such as economic development, affordable housing, and access to education. Michel called for a collaborative approach, stating, "If we want to help families not just survive, but thrive, we must help in connecting these dots."
