The hospital experienced a critical outage lasting up to five days due to a malfunctioning IBM device that disrupted patient registration and billing processes, severely impacting productivity and revenue collection.

During the meeting, officials revealed that the outage stemmed from a miscommunication with IBM, compounded by the absence of local technical support. As a result, hospital staff were unable to process billing for several days, leading to a backlog of charges that required manual entry. This disruption not only delayed revenue but also necessitated overtime work to catch up, raising concerns about the hospital's financial stability.

The estimated financial impact of the outage could reach as high as $42.8 million in delayed charges, based on previous incidents. Hospital representatives emphasized the critical nature of updating their IT systems, with a corrective action plan already submitted to the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS). This plan includes a proposed budget of $5 million annually for five years dedicated to enhancing IT infrastructure.
