5 Points Community Advocates Support Business Improvement District Proposal for Jacksonville

During a recent meeting of the Neighborhoods, Community Services, Public Health and Safety Committee in Jacksonville, community members voiced strong support for the establishment of a Business Improvement District (BID) in the 5 Points area. This initiative, outlined in ordinance 2025-0539, aims to enhance the cleanliness, safety, and overall vibrancy of one of Jacksonville's most frequented neighborhoods.

Casey Roth, representing Riverside Avondale Preservation, emphasized the importance of the BID, noting that it would provide essential services such as cleanup crews, landscaping, and maintenance, which would complement existing city services. Roth highlighted that the BID would help deter crime and improve the neighborhood's appeal for both residents and visitors.

Dory Thompson, president of the 5 Points Merchants Association, echoed these sentiments, presenting data from other cities that have successfully implemented BIDs. She pointed out that properties within BID boundaries often see increased property values and reduced crime rates. Thompson argued that the BID would empower local businesses and residents to take ownership of their community, fostering a safer and more inviting environment.

The committee meeting also addressed concerns about community engagement, with residents expressing a desire for better notification regarding upcoming meetings and discussions. The next steps for the BID proposal include a review by the LUZ Committee on September 3, followed by a planning commission meeting on August 21, where community members are encouraged to participate.

As the city moves forward with this initiative, the potential for improved public safety and neighborhood vitality remains a focal point for both residents and local leaders. The establishment of the BID could serve as a model for other areas in Jacksonville seeking similar enhancements.
