West Jefferson plans new Environmental Services Building and funds Recreation Center projects

Ashe County is making significant strides in its infrastructure and community services, as highlighted in the recent County Commission meeting held on August 18, 2025. The discussions centered around three major projects: the Environmental Services Building, the Recreational Center, and the Animal Shelter.

The Environmental Services Building is set to be a 12,000 square foot facility featuring three service bays, including one with a pit for easier vehicle maintenance, and a wash bay. The design also includes office space, a parts room, and a break room for staff. The building will be constructed from metal, with a mezzanine for additional storage. A formal presentation on the project’s progress and preliminary budget is expected in the upcoming meetings.

Progress is also being made on the Recreational Center, with fundraising efforts underway. Recent listening sessions have engaged local interest groups, including pickleball players, to gather support and potential donations. The team is also coordinating with high school recreation groups to ensure their needs are represented in the planning process.

Additionally, the commission has been exploring options for a new Animal Shelter. Tours of existing facilities in Caldwell and Stokes counties have provided valuable insights into effective designs and operations. Future visits to nearby counties are planned to gather more ideas for Ashe County's shelter.

Commissioner Dan emphasized the need for a planning session to prioritize these capital projects and discuss funding strategies. He called for a facilitated discussion among board members to ensure that the county effectively addresses these important initiatives.
