Ice County Rescue Squad Updates on Extensive Search for Missing Man

The Ashe County Commission meeting on August 18, 2025, featured a significant update from Robert Poe of the Ice County Rescue Squad regarding a recent search operation for a missing individual. Poe detailed the extensive efforts undertaken by the rescue team and various organizations in response to the case of a 63-year-old man who had been missing for approximately five hours.

Poe explained that the man, who had health issues stemming from a motorcycle accident and a stroke, had wandered off while his sister was away visiting friends. The search began on the night of August 10 and involved multiple agencies, including the Ice County Sheriff’s Department. Teams conducted hasty searches of roads and trails until 1 AM, then resumed at 7 AM the following morning.

Throughout the operation, which lasted several days, a total of 1,739.3 hours were logged by volunteers and team members, equating to an estimated value of $27,828.80 if calculated at $16 per hour. Poe highlighted the use of advanced search techniques, including drones equipped with thermal imaging and spotlights, as well as canine teams. The search covered a vast area, totaling 689 acres, with significant distances traveled both on foot and by vehicle.

Poe emphasized the collaborative nature of the operation, noting the involvement of 30 different organizations from across the state. He invited further questions and discussions about the operation, indicating his willingness to provide more detailed information if needed.
