Empire Estates Celebrates Delmar Street's Canopy Street of Excellence Award

The Overland Park City Council meeting held on August 18, 2025, featured a presentation from the Legacy of Greenery Committee regarding the 2025 Canopy Street of Excellence Award. The committee, represented by Baker Patterson from the University of Forestry and members Marie Hunter and Larry Jiscret, highlighted the importance of mature street trees in enhancing environmental, social, aesthetic, and economic values within the community.

The Canopy Street of Excellence Award, established in 2021, aims to raise awareness and promote the planting of street trees. This year, Delmar Street, located in the Empire Estates neighborhood, was recognized for its significant tree cover and diversity. The street boasts 45 trees, with a notable variety of species, including pin oaks and Siberian elms, which have been well-maintained over the years.

Patterson detailed the street's characteristics, noting its gentle slope and curve, which contribute to its visual appeal. The neighborhood has a replanting species plan in place, ensuring that any removed trees will be replaced with appropriate species, including linden and hardy rubber trees. This proactive approach aims to maintain and enhance the tree canopy in the area.

The presentation also included data on the environmental benefits provided by the trees, estimating that they intercept over 103,000 gallons of rainfall annually, with a projected value of over $93,000 over the next 20 years if the trees remain healthy. The committee emphasized the importance of continuing to promote street tree planting, especially in areas affected by the removal of ash trees.

The meeting concluded with a call to action for community members to engage in tree planting efforts, reinforcing the committee's commitment to enhancing Overland Park's green spaces. The council expressed gratitude for the committee's work and encouraged residents to visit Delmar Street to appreciate its natural beauty.
