Highland Village Plans Summer Fishing Tournament to Engage Youth and Promote Safety

Highlands Parks and Recreation Advisory Board has announced an exciting new initiative aimed at engaging local youth in outdoor activities while promoting safety. During their recent meeting on August 18, 2025, board members discussed a proposed fishing competition designed for teenagers, which will encourage participants to showcase their fishing skills through a photo submission contest.

The competition will require participants to submit a photo of their catch, along with their name, age, and the location where the fish was caught. The top five submissions will be recognized, with the board expressing confidence in securing sponsorships to support the event. This initiative not only aims to foster a love for fishing among local youth but also emphasizes safety practices while enjoying outdoor activities.

In addition to the fishing competition, the board reported impressive participation numbers from the recent Kid Venture Camp, which hosted 192 campers over eight weeks. This represents a 48% participation rate from Highland Village residents and generated nearly $10,000 in revenue, marking a 97% increase from the previous year. The success of this camp, along with sold-out cooking and babysitting sessions, highlights the growing interest in recreational programs within the community.

The board is optimistic about the potential of the fishing competition to further engage youth and promote outdoor activities. Plans for a broader summer fishing tournament in the future were also discussed, indicating a commitment to expanding recreational opportunities for residents.
