City Council Plans $140K Renovation for Underutilized Lower Sellmire Park

In a recent meeting of the Highlands Parks and Recreation Advisory Board, community members gathered to discuss the future of Lower Sellmire Park, a neighborhood green space that has seen little use over the years. The park, which features a shaded playground, picnic areas, and limited parking, has been described as underutilized, with some residents noting they have rarely seen anyone visit.

The board is considering a $140,000 budget earmarked for improvements to the park, which may include refurbishing the existing playground or even repurposing the space entirely. Discussions highlighted the need for community input on what amenities would best serve local residents. Suggestions ranged from updating playground equipment to creating open fields for soccer or basketball courts.

Concerns were raised about the park's accessibility, particularly regarding its parking situation. Currently, visitors must navigate a gravel area that accommodates only a few cars, leading to safety concerns on the adjacent road. Board members acknowledged that the park's proximity to two other parks—Victoria Park and Turpin Park—could influence decisions about where to allocate funds.
