City Council Approves Increased Truck Traffic Limits for Sienna Area Routes

Missouri City Council has approved significant amendments to truck traffic regulations, increasing the maximum daily truck trips from 250 to 300. The updated routes will now include Thompson Ferry Road to Sienna Springs, Sienna Ranch, and connections to Fort Bend Toll and Sienna Parkway. This decision aims to address ongoing traffic concerns while accommodating the needs of local businesses.

City staff recommended the changes after discussions with the quarry and mining operators, who sought to extend their operational hours. The new regulations will allow truck traffic outside the Sienna area to operate from 6 AM to 5 PM, while restricting Sienna Parkway usage to 8 AM to 4 PM. This compromise aims to alleviate congestion during peak hours, particularly for residents commuting to work.

Council members expressed concerns about the lack of financial benefits for the city, noting that the quarry operations do not generate sales tax revenue. The city manager confirmed that property tax contributions from the quarry are negligible, raising questions about the long-term viability of the agreement. Some council members suggested implementing a usage fee for trucks to help offset road maintenance costs.

The council's discussions highlighted the challenges of monitoring compliance with the new regulations, particularly regarding the number of truck trips. Police Chief Harris noted that while the hours of operation are clear, tracking the number of trips would be more complex without a system in place for drivers to report their movements.

As the council moves forward, they will consider additional measures to address the impact of truck traffic on local roads, including potential user fees. The amendments reflect a balancing act between supporting local industry and addressing the concerns of residents affected by increased truck traffic.
