Rockwall ISD Community Members Advocate for Educator Funding and Support

Concerns over funding for essential school staff took center stage at the Rockwall ISD Board of Trustees meeting on August 18, 2025, as community members voiced their support for a proposed salary and compensation plan. The discussion highlighted the critical need for fair compensation for librarians, counselors, and other vital educational roles that have been overlooked in recent funding decisions.

During public comments, a passionate speaker emphasized the importance of retaining experienced educators, noting that the district has seen a significant decline in veteran teachers. "Five years ago, 57 percent of our teachers had over 20 years of experience. Today, that number has dropped to just 16 percent," they stated, underscoring the direct link between teacher experience and student success.

Another speaker, a librarian from the newly opened Ursula Rayko Middle School, shared personal stories illustrating the invaluable role librarians play in student and teacher support. She pointed out that schools with librarians perform significantly better academically, reinforcing the argument for their inclusion in salary increases. "Without the VADER, we risk losing those experienced professionals who dedicate their lives to our schools," she warned.

The board is considering a voter approval tax ratification election to support the proposed compensation plan, which aims to address these pressing concerns.
