McKinney ISD honors student leadership, fine arts, and new communications designer Amanda Gavin

The McKinney Independent School District (MISD) held a significant school board meeting on August 18, 2025, where several noteworthy achievements and administrative changes were highlighted. Deputy Superintendent Melanie Raleigh announced that three elementary schools—Edens, Wilmeth, and Minchew—and Dow Middle School received the Texas Elementary Principal and Supervisors Association Student Leadership Award. In a further celebration of excellence, Robert Quah, the assistant principal at McKinney High School, was recognized for his exceptional leadership. He received two prestigious awards: the Region 10 Outstanding Assistant Principal of the Year from the Texas Association of Secondary School Principals and the 2025 Administrator of the Year from the Texas Association of Journalism Educators. Quah's efforts in implementing restorative practices and supporting special education and English learners were particularly noted, reflecting his dedication to fostering an inclusive and supportive educational environment.

The meeting also celebrated the MISD Visual Art Department, which earned the Texas Art Educator Association District of Distinction Award for the second consecutive year. This recognition places MISD among the top 8% of districts in Texas, highlighting the district's commitment to quality art education and community engagement.

Additionally, the MISD Music Department received national recognition as a NAMM Best Community for Music Education for the tenth year in a row. This award underscores the district's dedication to providing high-quality music education and reflects the collaborative efforts of educators and students alike.

In administrative news, Amanda Gavin was appointed as the new communications and media designer for MISD. With over 25 years of experience in public education, Gavin is expected to enhance the district's communication strategies and social media presence.
