School District Secures AmeriCorps Grant to Add Social Work Intern Positions

The Derby School Board meeting on August 18, 2025, highlighted significant developments in the district's summer programs and the reinstatement of an important grant aimed at enhancing student support services.

One of the standout achievements discussed was the success of the summer food service program, which provided approximately 1,000,000 meals to students between July 2024 and June 2025. Dr. Putnam Jackson announced that the grant was restored at its previous funding level of $166,776 for the 2025-2026 school year, along with the addition of 11 new service member positions for social work interns. This development is particularly significant as it aims to address behavioral challenges observed in elementary schools and provide students with valuable work-based learning experiences.

The board emphasized the importance of these social work internships, which will allow graduate students to gain practical experience while supporting the district's students.
