Waukesha Approves Habitat for Humanity's Proposal for Increased Construction Loans

In a recent meeting of the Waukesha Redevelopment Authority, discussions centered on a significant request from Habitat for Humanity Waukesha regarding construction loans aimed at completing housing projects in the city. The authority has been collaborating with Habitat for Humanity over the past three years, providing short-term construction loans to support their initiatives, particularly at Dominica Park, a site previously used for crocheting.

Currently, Habitat for Humanity has three outstanding loans, each amounting to $200,000. The organization is seeking to streamline its funding process by proposing a new structure that would allow them to maintain up to four loans simultaneously, totaling a maximum of $800,000. This change would enable Habitat to secure necessary funds more efficiently as they work to complete seven remaining homes at Dominica Park by the end of 2026.

The proposed loans would continue to carry a 3% interest rate, and the authority discussed the possibility of granting staff the ability to approve these loans without needing to convene for each request. This approach aims to expedite the funding process, ensuring that construction can proceed without delays.

The Redevelopment Authority also reviewed its development fund, which currently holds approximately $1.5 million. The proposed increase in funding for Habitat would add an additional $200,000 to the existing loans, still leaving ample resources available for other projects.
