Abilene Zoo Announces Flamingo Transfer and New Pelican Exhibit Opening

During the recent Abilene Parks and Recreation meeting, a significant focus was placed on enhancing community engagement through various programs and updates. One of the standout discussions involved the availability of public maps detailing the city's green spaces. Officials confirmed that these maps, which include parks and maintenance areas, are accessible on the Parks and Recreation website. This initiative aims to clarify misconceptions about city responsibilities regarding park upkeep, allowing residents to better understand which areas are maintained by the city.

In a lively report from the seniors division, manager Anne Hall highlighted the success of the water walkers program, which saw participation from 606 seniors in July. Hall expressed enthusiasm for the health benefits of water activities and announced the launch of a new gardening club, supported by Willow Creek, to encourage outdoor engagement. Upcoming events include a rock painting class and a celebration of National Dog Day featuring therapy dogs, aimed at fostering companionship and joy among seniors.

Zoo director Jesse Patebaume shared updates on animal care and recent changes at the Abilene Zoo. Notably, the zoo bid farewell to its lesser flamingos, which were relocated to other institutions for breeding purposes. In exchange, the zoo welcomed brown pelicans, enhancing its native species representation. Patebaume also reported the passing of Carla, the oldest colobus monkey in captivity, and celebrated the birth of new animal offspring, including a blue duiker and a secretary bird.

The meeting concluded with excitement about the reopening of the Caribbean exhibit, which will now allow year-round viewing of various animals, and a special event featuring "Baby Shark" for families to enjoy.
