City Secures $300K in Grants for Kirby Lake and Fort Phantom Fishing Pier Enhancements

The Abilene Parks and Recreation Board recently convened to discuss significant improvements to local recreational facilities, highlighting a commitment to enhancing community access to outdoor activities.

One of the most notable announcements was the approval of two grants totaling $150,000 from the Texas Parks and Wildlife Department. These funds will support the replacement of aging infrastructure at Kirby Lake and the addition of new facilities at Fort Phantom. The first project will involve replacing the existing fishing pier at Kirby Lake, which has deteriorated over time. The new pier will accommodate both fishing and boating, providing a safer and more functional space for residents and visitors alike. The second grant will fund the construction of a fishing pier and boat dock at the Southeast Boat Ramp at Fort Phantom, a location currently lacking such amenities. Both projects are set to be completed by August 2027, with the Kirby Lake improvements slated to begin first.

Among these is the resurfacing of the Adventure Cove, a popular zero-depth pool, which is due for maintenance after several years of use.
