Canfield Council Approves Natural Gas Aggregation Agreement with Buckeye Energy

Canfield City Council has taken a significant step towards securing stable natural gas prices for its residents by approving a new agreement with Buckeye Energy during a special meeting on August 19, 2025. The council voted to enter into a contract that allows the city to lock in natural gas prices, potentially saving residents money in the long run.

The agreement includes a provision that enables the city to fix the price of gas at a later date, depending on market conditions. Currently, the price for October is set at approximately 55 cents per unit, with hopes to secure a rate below 60 cents for the duration of the contract. Council members discussed the importance of monitoring market trends, particularly as winter approaches when prices typically rise.

Buckeye Energy will serve as the city’s consultant, providing ongoing assessments of the market and advising when it would be advantageous to lock in prices. The council emphasized that the responsibility for monitoring the market lies with Buckeye Energy, ensuring that the city is not burdened with this task.

In addition to the gas pricing discussions, the council moved to expedite the adoption of the ordinance related to this agreement, waiving the requirement for two readings and approving it on the first reading. This decision reflects the urgency of securing favorable pricing ahead of the winter months when demand—and consequently prices—are expected to increase.

The council's proactive approach aims to provide financial relief to residents by stabilizing gas costs, particularly during the colder months when heating needs rise. As the city continues to navigate fluctuating energy prices, this agreement positions Canfield to better manage its natural gas expenses moving forward.
