CCA and FDOT Partner to Transform Bridge into Artificial Reef for Indian River County

The Indian River County Board of County Commissioners convened on August 19, 2025, to discuss several key initiatives, including environmental projects and a proclamation recognizing local water professionals.

The meeting commenced with a presentation from the Coastal Conservation Association (CCA), which announced a significant donation of $110,000 towards the transformation of a bridge demolition site into an artificial reef. A representative from CCA highlighted the environmental benefits of artificial reefs, noting their positive impact on local ecosystems and the economy. The reefs are expected to attract fishing and diving enthusiasts, thereby boosting local businesses such as gas stations, bait and tackle shops, and restaurants.

Following this, the board moved to a proclamation designating August 2025 as Florida Water Professionals Month. County Commissioner Joe Ehrman presented the proclamation, acknowledging the vital role of water and wastewater operators in maintaining public health and environmental safety. He emphasized the hard work of these professionals, who often serve as first responders during emergencies, ensuring the community has access to safe drinking water and proper wastewater management.

Sean Lieske, Director of Indian River County Department of Utilities Services, also spoke, commending the dedication of the water professionals present at the meeting. He underscored the collaborative efforts required to provide essential water services to the community.
