Hidalgo County Honors University of Texas Rio Grande Valley's 10th Anniversary Celebration

The Hidalgo County Commissioner's Court convened on August 19, 2025, to commemorate the tenth anniversary of the University of Texas Rio Grande Valley (UTRGV). The meeting began with a proclamation recognizing the university's significant achievements since its establishment in 2015.

The proclamation highlighted UTRGV's impressive record of over 60,000 degrees awarded, a notable increase in research expenditures, and a commitment to student success reflected in record enrollment and graduation rates. The university has also made strides in medical education, opening the only medical school in South Texas in 2016 and expanding healthcare services with 25 clinical sites across the region. Additionally, UTRGV launched the state's first school of podiatric medicine in 2022 and plans to open a comprehensive academic cancer and surgery center in 2025, along with the state's second school of optometry in 2027.

Veronica Gonzales, Senior Vice President for Government and Community Relations at UTRGV, addressed the court, expressing gratitude for the recognition. She emphasized the university's growth, noting an enrollment of over 34,000 students and the addition of new degree programs. Gonzales also highlighted the university's impact on the local economy through its graduates and partnerships with Hidalgo County, particularly in supporting the medical school and community initiatives.

The meeting concluded with a unanimous vote to approve the proclamation, marking a decade of success for UTRGV and its contributions to the region. The court's recognition underscores the university's role in enhancing educational opportunities and community development in Hidalgo County.
