Grand Prairie Fire Department Unveils Enhanced Flood Warning System and Emergency Protocols

The Grand Prairie City Council meeting on August 19, 2025, highlighted significant advancements in the city's flood management and emergency response systems, addressing a critical concern for residents living in flood-prone areas.

Noreen Housewright, the director of engineering and utility services, presented an overview of the city's existing flood warning system, which is vital for the safety of the community. With a third of Grand Prairie located in a special flood hazard area, the city has implemented a comprehensive flood monitoring system that includes 23 flood gauges, floodgates, and sirens strategically placed in high-risk areas. Notably, Grand Prairie is the only city in the region equipped with flood warning sirens that deliver verbal messages in both English and Spanish, urging residents to evacuate when necessary.

The city's proactive approach is underscored by its impressive ranking in the Community Rating System (CRS), where it holds a Class 4 designation, allowing residents to benefit from a 30% discount on flood insurance rates. This ranking places Grand Prairie second among 77 participating cities in Texas, just behind Dallas.

During the meeting, Housewright emphasized the importance of community education regarding flood risks and the use of various communication platforms, including the Everbridge notification system, which allows residents to receive timely alerts via phone calls, texts, or emails. This system is crucial for disseminating information during severe weather events, ensuring that residents are well-informed and prepared.

In addition to flood management discussions, the council addressed other community concerns, including the extension of a contract with a lobbying firm that has served the city for 20 years. Council members expressed the need for transparency and public engagement regarding the firm's activities and the impact of their work on local governance.

The meeting concluded with a commitment to continue enhancing public safety measures and engaging with residents to ensure they are informed about the resources available to them.
