Bexar County Citizens Advisory Committee recommends salary increases for sheriff and constables

Bexar County officials are set to receive salary adjustments following a comprehensive review by the Citizens Advisory Committee on Elected Official Salaries. During a recent Commissioners Court meeting, the committee presented its recommendations for fiscal years 2025-2026 and 2026-2027, which include a one-time salary increase for the sheriff and constables, as well as a cost-of-living adjustment (COLA) for all elected officials.

The committee, chaired by Elba Adams, conducted a thorough analysis of current compensation levels, comparing them with those of similar-sized counties in Texas. Their findings revealed that the sheriff's current base salary of $180,481 is 7.11% below the market average, prompting a recommendation for a one-time increase of $12,839. Similarly, constables, whose salaries currently stand at $122,660, are recommended to receive a $5,920.85 increase to align with market standards.

In addition to these specific adjustments, the committee proposed a 2% COLA for all elected officials, reflecting the recent salary increase approved for Bexar County employees. This adjustment aims to address inflationary pressures while ensuring that elected officials' compensation remains competitive.

The committee emphasized the importance of maintaining transparency and accountability in the salary determination process. They recommended that all elected officials disclose any additional compensation they receive, reinforcing public trust in the compensation system.
