Doctor Edison outlines ambitious five-year goals for student math and literacy improvement

In a recent meeting of the Del Valle Independent School District (ISD), excitement filled the air as Dr. Ruthie Edison and the superintendent shared ambitious goals aimed at enhancing student performance across key academic areas. The meeting, which followed a productive town hall gathering, highlighted the district's commitment to improving educational outcomes for its students.

The proposed goals are driven by the requirements of House Bill 3, focusing on three critical areas: elementary math, early literacy, and seventh-grade math, alongside a strong emphasis on college, career, and military readiness. The district aims to significantly boost performance metrics over the next five years. For elementary math, the goal is to elevate proficiency from 27% to 60%. Similarly, the target for third-grade reading is set to rise from approximately 32% to 60%. In seventh-grade math, the district seeks to improve from a mere 6% to 40%.

While discussing the performance of advanced eighth-grade math students, it was noted that they are currently achieving a passing rate of about 72%, with 42% meeting the expected standards. This indicates that while on-grade-level students face challenges, those in advanced classes are exceeding expectations.

Additionally, the district is aiming for a significant increase in college, career, and military readiness, with a goal of reaching 90% readiness within five years, up from the current 62%.

The meeting concluded with gratitude expressed towards community members who participated in the recent survey and town hall, emphasizing the importance of collaboration in achieving these educational goals. As Del Valle ISD moves forward, the focus remains on ensuring that every student is prepared for success beyond high school, fostering a brighter future for the entire community.
