Commissioners Approve Acquisition of Former Baylor Scott and White Building in Waxahachie

In a significant move for Ellis County, the Commissioners Court has approved the purchase of the former Baylor Scott and White building located at 1305 West Jefferson in Waxahachie. This decision, made during the meeting on August 19, 2025, aims to address pressing space needs for the county's elections office and other departments.

The nearly 50,000 square-foot facility will provide much-needed room for the elections office, which has been operating at capacity and currently rents additional space. The relocation is expected to streamline operations and improve efficiency, as the elections office is currently situated between the jail and the Courts Building, a location that has proven to be inadequate for its growing needs.

Commissioner Grayson highlighted the financial advantages of this acquisition, noting that the purchase price is significantly lower than the estimated costs for a new facility at the county farm. The county will be able to secure this property for approximately $11 million, compared to an estimated $22 million for new construction. This strategic decision not only saves taxpayer money but also allows for quicker occupancy, with plans to move in shortly after the purchase is finalized.

The building's location is also seen as a major benefit, providing better accessibility for residents compared to the more remote county farm site. The existing elections office will transition to the new location, while the current space will be repurposed for the sheriff's criminal investigations division, which has also been facing space constraints.

The court's decision reflects a commitment to improving county services and addressing the needs of various departments without incurring additional debt. The funding for the purchase and necessary updates will be drawn from the proposed 2026 budget, ensuring that the county can manage its finances effectively while enhancing its facilities.
