City Manager authorizes $2.4M remodeling of Fire Station Number 1

During the recent Lockhart City Council meeting held on August 19, 2025, significant discussions centered around the remodeling of Fire Station Number 1, located at 201 West Market Street. The council reviewed a resolution authorizing the city manager to execute a guaranteed maximum price (GMP) amendment with D. Wilson Construction Company for the project, which has a proposed budget of $2,441,745.

Assistant City Manager Joseph Rezendes presented the GMP proposal, which reflects current labor and material costs and includes a comprehensive scope of work based on 100% design drawings. The project aims to enhance the fire station's functionality and aesthetics, incorporating essential improvements such as roof replacement, exterior renovations, and interior updates.

Architect Amy Bramwell from Studio Steinbomber Architecture provided insights into the proposed changes. Notably, the existing asbestos tile roof will be replaced with a polymer-based product designed to mimic the original slate appearance. The project will also restore the fire station's historical colors, featuring a white and cream palette complemented by traditional red doors, a nod to the building's heritage.

Bramwell highlighted that all windows will be replaced with modern glass designs, enhancing both the building's appearance and energy efficiency. The project has already completed necessary asbestos abatement, allowing for safe construction practices moving forward. Additionally, the historical preservation committee has approved the plans, and building permits are in place, signaling that the project is set to commence soon.

The council's discussions reflect a commitment to preserving the historical significance of the fire station while ensuring it meets contemporary safety and operational standards. As the project progresses, it is expected to serve as a vital resource for the community, enhancing both public safety and local heritage.
