Jamaican Lakes Residents Advocate for Stormwater Infrastructure Improvements

Residents of Bay County voiced urgent concerns about stormwater management during the recent Board of County Commissioners meeting, highlighting the pressing need for improved infrastructure in the Jamaican Lake subdivision. Community member Don Smith urged officials to take action, explaining that the current drainage system is inadequate, with water from surrounding areas flowing into their neighborhood through a small pipe and poorly maintained ditches. Smith emphasized that the community has already invested over $250,000 to address drainage issues on their own, but they now seek support from the county to implement necessary infrastructure improvements.

Another resident, Robert Staton, echoed Smith's sentiments, calling for greater transparency regarding new developments and their potential impact on local infrastructure. He expressed concerns about increased traffic and loitering issues in Panama City Beach, particularly with the proposed construction of a low-end hotel, which he fears could detract from the family-friendly atmosphere the community aims to maintain.

In response to these concerns, Commissioner Peace requested a report on the status of water management in the Lake Muriel area, where there is potential for significant development. He noted that approximately 7,500 lots could be developed, underscoring the importance of addressing water management to facilitate this growth.

Additionally, the meeting featured discussions on educational initiatives, including a new high school first responder program aimed at providing students with hands-on training and certifications in emergency services. This initiative is designed to prepare local youth for careers in high-demand fields while encouraging them to remain in Bay County.

As the meeting concluded, commissioners reflected on community events, including a recent library initiative aimed at promoting reading among children, and reminded residents of an upcoming dedication ceremony for the Al Kathy Municipal Pier in Mexico Beach.
