Ketchikan Hillside Collapse Triggers Community Response and Recovery Efforts

Ketchikan Gateway Borough marked the one-year anniversary of the devastating Third Avenue landslide, a tragedy that reshaped the community and claimed lives. On August 25, 2024, the hillside above the Third Avenue bypass collapsed, sending trees and debris into the neighborhood below, resulting in significant loss and disruption.

In the immediate aftermath, emergency personnel from across the island responded swiftly. Peace officers, firefighters, EMTs, and volunteers worked tirelessly to evacuate residents from the affected area, while utility crews focused on clearing downed power lines. A team of geologists and emergency management professionals assessed the slide area, ensuring safety and facilitating the restoration of power and communications.
