The City of Santa Clara officially recognized August 24, 2025, as the 34th anniversary of Ukrainian Independence Day during a recent Joint Council and Authorities meeting. This significant proclamation honors Ukraine's declaration of independence in 1991 and celebrates the country's democracy, heritage, and culture.
The meeting featured representatives from the Ukrainian National Women's League of America, the largest Ukrainian women's organization in the U.S., with a local branch in Santa Clara. Lehi Korosh, the consul of Ukraine in San Francisco, and Irna Pilogava, president of the local branch, were present to accept the proclamation. They expressed gratitude for the ongoing support from the American people, particularly the Santa Clara community and its leaders.
Korosh highlighted the historical significance of Ukraine, tracing its roots back to Kievan Rus' in the ninth century. He emphasized the ongoing struggle for freedom and survival faced by Ukrainians, especially in light of recent conflicts with Russia. "Our fight is not only for the territory. It is for the very survival of our nation, our culture, our future," he stated, reinforcing the importance of international support during these challenging times.
Pilogava echoed these sentiments, thanking the city for the proclamation, which she described as a vital sign of support for Ukrainians fighting against oppression. The meeting concluded with a call for unity and continued assistance for Ukraine, underscoring the significance of solidarity in the face of adversity.
