Thurston County is set to revise speed limits on several key roads following a public hearing held on August 19, 2025. The proposed changes aim to enhance safety and align posted limits with actual traffic conditions.
During the meeting, traffic engineering and operations manager Becky Khan presented a detailed analysis of eight roads where speed limits are being reconsidered. The revisions include reducing limits from unposted 50 mph to 30 mph on Albany Street Southwest and Little Rock Road Southwest, as well as lowering Case Extension Road from a posted 40 mph to 25 mph. Other proposed changes include adjusting Pleasant Glade Road Northeast from an unposted 50 mph to 25 mph and modifying Sleater Kinney Road Northeast from a posted 50 mph to 40 mph.
Khan emphasized that these changes are based on traffic studies that consider vehicle speeds, road conditions, and safety concerns. For instance, Pleasant Glade Road, which serves a residential area and is near a school, has seen a significant number of vehicles daily, justifying the proposed reduction to 25 mph.
Public comments during the hearing reflected a mix of support and concern. While some residents expressed approval for the changes, particularly on roads with high pedestrian traffic, others questioned the effectiveness of merely lowering speed limits without additional enforcement measures. Concerns were raised about the potential for increased road rage and non-compliance with the new limits.
The Board of County Commissioners will review the public feedback and is expected to vote on the proposed speed limit revisions in the coming weeks. If approved, new signage will be installed, and the sheriff's office will be notified to help enforce the updated limits. This initiative underscores the county's commitment to improving road safety and responding to community needs.
