Officer Clawson Awarded for Assisting Disabled Veteran After Bus Depot Incident

The Austin Police Department (APD) held its Summer Awards Ceremony on August 20, 2025, recognizing outstanding contributions from officers in the community. The event highlighted acts of bravery and dedication, with particular focus on two significant awards.

Officer Walker was honored for his courageous response to a traffic hazard on January 5, 2025. While protecting a disabled vehicle and tow truck, his patrol car was struck by a drunk driver at high speed. The incident resulted in a torn rotator cuff for Officer Walker, necessitating surgery and a lengthy recovery period. His commitment to public safety during this dangerous situation was acknowledged with heartfelt congratulations.

Another notable recognition was awarded to Officer Robert Clawson, who received the Community Service Award for his exemplary service on December 17, 2024. Officer Clawson responded to a Capital Metro bus depot where he encountered a fellow veteran confined to an electric wheelchair. After ensuring the veteran received assistance from Capital Metro, Officer Clawson went above and beyond by sponsoring the veteran for a trip to Washington, D.C., through Honor Flight Austin, a nonprofit dedicated to honoring veterans. His actions not only provided immediate help but also fostered a lasting positive relationship between the police and the community.

The ceremony underscored the importance of community policing and the impact of officers who demonstrate genuine care and concern for citizens. The recognition of these officers serves as a reminder of the vital role law enforcement plays in building trust and support within the community.
