Maui Residents Push for Hotel Zoning to Support Short Term Rentals Amid Economic Struggles

In the heart of Maui County, a recent meeting of the Housing and Land Use Committee brought to light pressing concerns about the future of the local economy and housing regulations. As the sun dipped low over the island, community members gathered to voice their opinions on the Temporary Investigation Group (TIG) and its ambitious plans for the region.

One of the most poignant testimonies came from Kathy Kim, who expressed skepticism about the TIG's ability to revitalize Maui's economy. "If a bad idea is a bad idea, it's probably just gonna stay a bad idea," she remarked, highlighting the challenges faced by the council and the mayor over the past 14 months. Kim pointed to a recent study from the Office of Recovery, which emphasized the need to support tourism and local businesses to avoid further economic decline. With losses amounting to $1.5 billion last year, her concerns resonated deeply with the audience. Following Kim, Bo, a member of the rezoning committee and owner at Maui Kamaoli, presented a case for rezoning his property from apartment to hotel status. He argued that this change would allow for the continuation of short-term rentals, which have been a staple of the community since the property’s inception in 1989. Bo emphasized the historical use of Maui Kamaoli as a resort and its prime location near popular tourist attractions. "With more than 95% of the units operating as short-term rentals, hotel zoning is the most accurate designation," he stated, aligning his request with the mayor's guidance on property use.
