San Antonio's 2026 Budget Allocates $30M for Homeless Services and Housing Initiatives

In a recent special session of the San Antonio City Council, officials discussed the proposed budget for the fiscal year 2026, which totals $26.1 million. A significant portion of this budget, approximately $21.5 million, is already contracted, with a focus on addressing homelessness and providing essential services to vulnerable populations.

The budget allocates $30.5 million for various neighborhood services, including $26.2 million specifically aimed at supporting individuals experiencing homelessness. This funding will enhance emergency services and initiatives aimed at helping women in need, with $4.8 million earmarked for ongoing support programs. The city is partnering with organizations like Seven Elevenistries to provide 24/7 operations that include mental health assistance and transitional housing for those at risk of homelessness.

Over the past two years, San Antonio has invested in housing solutions, resulting in 526 individuals receiving assistance, with 261 successfully transitioning to permanent housing. However, challenges remain, as approximately 200 individuals have returned to homelessness, highlighting the ongoing need for effective support systems.

The council also addressed the rising number of young adults aged 18 to 24 experiencing homelessness, which has increased from 178 to 200. To combat this issue, the city is collaborating with local organizations to develop targeted programs that cater to this vulnerable demographic.

Additionally, the meeting highlighted the city's efforts to manage encampments, with a coordinated approach to assess and address these situations. The city has removed over 1,300 encampments, incurring costs of approximately $2,000 for each cleanup. Officials emphasized the importance of proactive measures to prevent homelessness before it escalates.
