Dallas Fire Rescue's Blood Program Saves Lives with Prehospital Transfusions

The Dallas City Council meeting on August 20, 2025, highlighted a groundbreaking initiative by the Dallas Fire and Rescue Department: a new blood program that has already saved lives. Launched in February, this program enables paramedics to administer life-saving blood transfusions en route to hospitals, significantly improving outcomes for patients suffering from traumatic injuries.

Interim Assistant Chief Scott Paco praised the program's impact, stating, "We knew that just saving one life would make this program a success." So far, 18 patients have received transfusions, with many lives saved thanks to the quick response of Dallas Fire Rescue teams. Dr. Marshall Isaacs, the Chief Medical Director for Dallas Fire Rescue, emphasized the importance of this initiative, noting that it demonstrates the department's commitment to being good stewards of the blood supply and providing timely care.

One poignant moment came when Dr. Kate Kraus, an emergency medicine physician and a recent patient of the program, shared her harrowing experience. After suffering from severe postpartum hemorrhage, she received two units of blood from paramedics just outside her home. "Thanks to Dallas Fire Rescue, I'm alive to talk to you today," she said, underscoring the program's life-saving potential.

In addition to the blood program, the council recognized collaborative efforts in the Midtown Twin Hills area, where various city departments have worked together to enhance public safety and quality of life. This initiative includes outreach to individuals experiencing homelessness and improvements to local infrastructure.

The meeting concluded with a strong message of gratitude for the dedication of Dallas Fire Rescue personnel and a commitment to continue elevating the standard of care for residents.
