Lexington Police Explorer Program Provides Youth Pathway to Law Enforcement Careers

The Lexington Police Explorer Program is making waves in the community, providing young people with a unique pathway into law enforcement. Meeting every Thursday from 6 to 9 PM at West Rockall, the program not only offers training but also engages participants in various community service events, including traffic control at UK Football Games and upcoming bike patrols.

Officers Meredith and Hobson, both products of the program, shared their experiences, emphasizing how it has shaped their careers. "This program gives you the opportunity to see the inner workings of how our department runs," said Officer Meredith, highlighting the networking opportunities and hands-on experience it provides. Officer Hobson echoed this sentiment, recalling how meeting a police officer at age 14 inspired him to pursue a career in law enforcement.

The program is not just for those aiming to become police officers; it also equips participants with valuable life skills. "We've had explorers go on to be teachers, EMTs, and join the military," noted Officer Hobson, showcasing the program's broad appeal. Physical fitness training, including the Police Officer Standard Training (POST), is a key component, preparing participants for the rigors of the police academy.

The Explorers also participate in national competitions, fostering camaraderie and teamwork. "It's fun to see their work come together," said Officer Meredith, reflecting on their recent trip to WinterFest in Gatlinburg, where they connected with other Explorer posts.
