A resident, who is also a realtor, expressed frustration over the presence of a large STR next to her home, highlighting how it could deter potential buyers from purchasing properties in the area. She emphasized that while Garland has traditionally been an attractive place to live due to its affordable housing and quality school system, the current situation with STRs is causing her to reconsider her support for the community.

The discussion revealed that the existing ordinance for STRs may not be adequately enforced. The resident noted that her neighbor obtained a permit for an 11-bedroom, 6.5-bath rental for a mere $50, without any inspection. This raised questions among council members about the permitting process and whether it effectively addresses the capacity of STRs. Councilman Williams pointed out that the current ordinance does require inspections, but there are concerns that properties may have been modified without proper oversight after permits were issued.
