Laredo City Council Approves $2.5M Street Preservation Program for Paving

The Laredo City Council meeting on August 18, 2025, focused on a significant initiative to enhance the city's street infrastructure through a proposed payment preservation program. The price of hot mix asphalt has surged from $28 to $77 per ton over recent years, underscoring the need for timely action to prevent further increases in expenses. The preservation method proposed involves applying an oil-based material to existing pavement, which can add an additional 5 to 8 years of life to the streets.

The council discussed the criteria for selecting streets eligible for the program, which must have a Pavement Condition Index (PCI) rating between 40 and 75. Streets in worse condition will not qualify for this preservation effort. The council members expressed their support for the initiative, recognizing its potential to improve road safety and quality for residents.

In addition to the street preservation program, the meeting also included discussions on various zoning ordinances and permits, including the approval of a special use permit for vehicle enterprises and amendments to zoning maps for residential developments. These discussions reflect ongoing efforts to manage urban development and enhance community infrastructure in Laredo.
