Sheriff Garrett urges budget reinstatement for staff and safety resources in Rockwall County

Sheriff Garrett highlighted the alarming growth in Rockwall County's population, which has surged by 93% since 2017, while staffing levels have only increased by 45%. He emphasized the urgent need for additional communication officers, courthouse deputies, and an administrative assistant to meet rising safety demands. "Public safety is an essential function in keeping our community safe and secure," he stated, underscoring the risks posed by chronic vacancies and the competitive job market for law enforcement.

The sheriff pointed out that the county is currently housing 264 inmates and that his department has faced significant staffing challenges, including an average of 12 to 15 vacancies in the jail over the past four years. He warned that without competitive pay and adequate staffing, the county risks slower response times and higher crime rates, echoing concerns seen in other cities facing similar funding issues.

In addition to Sheriff Garrett's requests, Constable Randy Parks also addressed the court, advocating for a part-time deputy to manage an increasing workload, particularly with evictions rising above 250. He proposed funding for a new vehicle and equipment for the deputy, suggesting that reallocating funds from another budget line could help cover these costs.
