Nicole Ashby presents successful swim program at Gullah Swim Academy to James Island Council

The James Island Town Council meeting held on August 21, 2025, featured a special presentation from Nicole Ashby, owner of the Gullah Swim Academy, alongside Commander Hoffman from the VFW. The meeting commenced with a moment of silence and the Pledge of Allegiance, led by Councilman Boles.

Nicole Ashby provided an overview of the Gullah Swim Academy, which aims to promote water safety and swimming skills within the community, particularly among minority populations. With over 30 years of experience in the aquatic industry, Ashby highlighted the success of their recent summer swimming program, which registered 55 participants over a four-week period. The program was conducted at the City of Charleston's recreation center, utilizing three swim lanes.

Ashby detailed the structure of the swim lessons, which included safety protocols, basic swimming techniques, and age-appropriate instruction. Participants ranged from ages 4 to 18, with some adults joining in to foster a family-oriented learning environment. The program emphasized the importance of water safety, especially in flood-prone areas, and aimed to build a positive relationship with water among community members.

Challenges faced during the program included securing a suitable location and accommodating working parents' schedules. Ashby expressed a desire to expand the program in the future, potentially offering evening lessons and additional locations to increase accessibility. She also noted the need for improved registration processes to assist families who may struggle with technology.

The meeting concluded with Ashby advocating for continued support from the town to enhance the swim program, emphasizing the importance of community engagement in reducing drowning incidents and promoting water safety. The council acknowledged the presentation and expressed appreciation for the efforts made by the Gullah Swim Academy.
