SmartQuest Academy Sign Variance Proposal Discussed by City Council

In a recent government meeting, the Southlake City Council discussed a proposed sign variance for SmartQuest Academy, a preschool located in the 280 Sports Complex. The meeting highlighted the need for a more colorful and welcoming sign to better appeal to young children and their families.

Elisa Cabriglione, representing SmartQuest Academy, explained that the current sign design, established long ago, lacks the vibrant colors that would make it more preschool-friendly. The owner of the academy expressed a desire for a slight color enhancement to create a more inviting atmosphere. However, council members raised concerns about the visibility of the proposed colors, particularly a yellow that was deemed difficult to see.

The council deliberated on three main issues: the height of the logo, the design area, and the colors used in the sign. While some members supported the idea of allowing color variations, others preferred to adhere strictly to existing sign ordinances to avoid setting a precedent for future requests. A compromise was suggested to keep the lettering black, which would align with other signs in the area, while allowing the logo and some colors to remain.

Ultimately, the council decided to request three options to be presented to the city council: one that complies fully with the sign ordinance, one that changes the lettering from brown to black, and one that retains the original colorful design. This decision aims to balance the academy's desire for a friendly appearance with the need to maintain consistency and visibility in signage throughout the community.

The meeting also touched on a separate agenda item regarding sign variances for Burger King, indicating ongoing discussions about signage regulations in Southlake.
