Volunteers Sought for Farmers Market and Cleanup Los Alamos Day Events

Volunteers are being called to action in Los Alamos as the Environmental Sustainability Board gears up for two significant community events this September. The first opportunity is at the Farmer's Market on September 11, where residents can lend a hand alongside local volunteers. Following that, Cleanup Los Alamos Day is scheduled for September 20, encouraging community members to come together to tidy up local areas.

During the meeting, board members highlighted the importance of these events, particularly noting the Canyon Room Trail as a preferred cleanup location due to its accessibility and safety for participants. An email will be sent out with further details for those interested in volunteering.

In addition to volunteer efforts, the board reviewed the latest sustainability report, revealing that the Eco Station successfully diverted 32% of materials from landfills in July. While this figure is commendable, it marks a decrease from the previous year, prompting discussions on improving waste management strategies. The board also noted the challenges posed by transporting waste to the Valencia Landfill, which is significantly farther and more costly than the Rio Rancho Landfill.

Looking ahead, the board plans to continue its work on various initiatives, including a presentation on council updates and research regarding the plastic bag fee.
