Council Member Reynolds Promotes 811 Utility Safety Ahead of August 11 Awareness Day

During a recent planning commission work session in Lexington, Kentucky, officials emphasized the critical importance of the 811 service, which helps residents avoid dangerous accidents when digging. Council member Jennifer Reynolds led the discussion, joined by Tim Vaughn, executive director of Kentucky 811, and Lisa Smith, public affairs manager for Columbia Gas of Kentucky.

The meeting highlighted that August 11 is recognized as National 811 Day, a reminder for homeowners and contractors alike to call before they dig. Vaughn explained that the 811 service is essential for any digging project, no matter how small, as it helps identify buried utility lines. Failing to call can lead to serious consequences, including utility outages, personal injury, and costly repairs.

Vaughn noted that the law requires individuals to wait two full business days after calling 811 before starting any digging. This waiting period allows utility companies to mark the locations of their lines, ensuring safety during excavation. He also stressed the importance of understanding the color-coded marking system used by utilities: red for electric, blue for water, green for sewer, orange for telecommunications, and yellow for gas.

Smith added that residents should not remove utility flags marking these lines, as they indicate ongoing projects and are crucial for safety. If residents smell gas, they are advised to evacuate the area immediately and call 911.

The session underscored the community's responsibility to prioritize safety and communication when engaging in any digging activities. By promoting awareness of the 811 service, local officials aim to prevent accidents and ensure the well-being of Lexington residents.
