City Council Approves Key Road Projects Including Barrow Street and College Heights

Abilene's Street Maintenance Advisory and Appeals Board has made significant strides in addressing the city's road maintenance needs during their recent meeting on August 21, 2025. The board has prioritized several key projects aimed at improving the safety and accessibility of heavily trafficked areas.

Among the most notable decisions was the approval of a $3.7 million project for Barrow Street, which stretches from South Second to South Eleventh. This section is recognized as a critical thoroughfare, serving as a vital inlet and outlet for local traffic, particularly near HEB, a popular shopping destination. Board members emphasized the importance of this project due to the high volume of vehicles that traverse this route daily.

Additionally, the board discussed the College Heights area, which has been on the maintenance list for three years. This project, estimated at approximately $2.4 million, is one of the oldest on the list and is expected to address long-standing road issues. The Soda District also received attention, with a proposed $1.1 million allocated for preventative maintenance to ensure the longevity of the roads in this bustling area.

The board also considered a $330,000 project for 25th Street from Ross to Buffalo Gap, further enhancing the city's infrastructure. To ensure flexibility in their budget, members proposed a contingency project for preventative maintenance on Lone Star, allowing for adjustments should costs come in lower than anticipated.
