Monica Von Wadden expands Hope Boston's food security efforts in Lago Vista schools

The Lago Vista City Council meeting on August 21, 2025, highlighted pressing issues of food insecurity among local children and the importance of community support for cultural initiatives.

Monica Von Wadden, founder and executive director of Hope Boston, addressed the council about the alarming rates of food insecurity in Central Texas, where one in four children face hunger. She detailed the organization's efforts to provide meal kits and snacks to students in Lago Vista, emphasizing that all funds raised remain within the community. Last year, Hope Boston distributed nearly 1,500 meal kits and over 5,900 snacks, with a total expenditure of approximately $7,800. Von Wadden requested continued support to ensure that no child in need is turned away.

Following her presentation, Susan Nielsen Weiscott from the Lago Vista Alliance echoed the need for food assistance, particularly during school breaks when children lack access to meals. She shared their initiative to provide curated food boxes to families, which has seen increasing demand over the past year.

The meeting also featured Roy Moore from the Hill Country Singers, who discussed the group's contributions to the community through choral music. He highlighted their performances and educational opportunities for local youth, noting that the organization relies on volunteer support for administrative costs. Moore requested funding to sustain their programs, emphasizing the cultural value they bring to Lago Vista.
