Sherryland ISD Reports Growth in Reading While Addressing Seventh Grade Math Concerns

Sharyland ISD is celebrating notable academic growth as preliminary results for the 2024-2025 school year reveal that the district continues to outperform both regional and state averages in Reading Language Arts (RLA) across all grade levels. This achievement comes despite concerns regarding specific subjects, particularly seventh-grade math, which has seen a decline in performance due to recent legislative changes mandating advanced placement for top-performing students.

During the Regular Board Meeting on June 23, 2025, district officials highlighted the positive trajectory in RLA, emphasizing that students are excelling in reading and writing skills. The district's performance in this area is a source of pride, showcasing effective teaching strategies and student engagement.

However, the meeting also addressed challenges in math, particularly in seventh grade, where performance has dipped. This decline is attributed to Senate Bill 2124, which requires the top 40% of fifth graders in math to be placed in advanced classes, impacting the overall performance of seventh graders who remain in standard math courses. The district plans to implement targeted communication efforts to inform parents about their options regarding advanced placement, aiming to ensure that students are appropriately challenged without compromising their foundational skills.

In addition to math, fifth-grade science and eighth-grade social studies were identified as areas needing improvement. The district is committed to strengthening the curriculum in these subjects, particularly by enhancing foundational knowledge in earlier grades to support fifth-grade science performance.

Despite these challenges, Sharyland ISD remains optimistic, reporting that they have outperformed the state and region in 80% of assessments. The district is focused on addressing the identified areas of concern through early intervention and instructional improvements, ensuring that all students have the opportunity to succeed in their academic endeavors. As the school year progresses, Sharyland ISD is poised to build on its successes while tackling the challenges ahead.
