City Council members received a comprehensive update on multiple regional road projects during the June 9 meeting, with Public Works Director Eric Shaw detailing significant improvements planned for Wasilla and surrounding areas.
Shaw highlighted the ongoing collaboration between the city, borough, and the Metropolitan Planning Organization (MPO) to utilize previously allocated funds for road enhancements. Notably, the borough has proposed eight projects, including critical resurfacing for Tech Street and Lucille Street, both plagued by potholes. The estimated cost for repaving Tech Street is approximately $1.5 million, with the city’s match being around $130,000. Lucille Street's resurfacing is projected at $770,000, requiring a $65,000 match from the city.
In addition to road repairs, Shaw introduced several planning projects aimed at improving infrastructure. A streetlight and intersection management mapping project is set to identify and assess the condition of streetlights within the MPO boundary, with a funding request of $400,000. Another $400,000 project will focus on a sign management plan to ensure safety and compliance with federal standards. A pavement management plan, estimated at $300,000, aims to utilize advanced data collection methods to assess road conditions and prioritize repairs.
Shaw also discussed the borough's Safe Streets for All initiative, which has narrowed down to six projects, including a separated path and crossings for Wasilla Bridal and High Schools. This project is part of a larger $17.5 million grant application aimed at enhancing pedestrian safety.
The meeting also touched on ongoing Department of Transportation (DOT) projects, including the repaving of Church Road and the installation of a flashing beacon at the Church Road and Spruce Avenue intersection to improve safety. The Main Street project, expected to cost between $70 million and $80 million, is in its final design stages, with construction anticipated to start next summer.
As the council moves forward, the focus remains on expediting these projects to address the community's pressing infrastructure needs while ensuring safety and accessibility for residents.
