Albany City School District officials announced a modest increase in the school tax levy during the Board of Education public meeting on August 21, 2025. The approved budget for the 2025-2026 school year will see the tax levy rise by 0.9%, amounting to an additional $1.1 million. This brings the total tax levy to approximately $133.3 million, reflecting an overall increase of about 1.13%.
Despite the increase in the tax levy, the tax rate per thousand for homeowners is projected to decrease slightly. For the upcoming year, the homestead tax rate will be approximately $14.11, while the non-homestead rate will be around $19.63. This change means that a home valued at $236,000 will experience a decrease in school taxes by about $47, or 1.3%.
Additionally, the library levy will see a more significant increase of 4.12%, adding $390,000 to its budget. The library tax rate for the same home will rise from $262.56 to $266.82, reflecting a 1.62% increase.
The meeting also highlighted the STAR program, which provides tax relief for homeowners. The basic STAR exemption is set at $30,000, while seniors can benefit from an enhanced STAR exemption of $86,100.
These adjustments in the tax structure aim to balance the district's financial needs while providing some relief to homeowners. The school district remains committed to maintaining quality education and resources for its students amidst these changes.
