Outreach Team Expands Support for Homeless Families and Veterans in Local Community

The Marion County School Board's recent work session on August 21, 2025, highlighted critical efforts to address homelessness among students and families in the community. A key focus was the collaboration between local agencies to support those experiencing homelessness, particularly through the McKinney-Vento Act, which provides assistance to students in unstable housing situations.

During the meeting, officials discussed the importance of outreach efforts to identify and assist families who may not be visibly homeless but still face significant challenges. The outreach team, led by Thomas Butler, is set to compile a list of individuals classified as "literally homeless" by September 22. This proactive approach aims to connect these individuals with necessary resources and support, emphasizing that the team will meet them where they are—whether in cars, encampments, or other non-traditional living situations.

The discussion also touched on the complexities of engaging with families who may be hesitant to accept help. One case was shared about a mother living in an abandoned house with her children, who initially refused assistance but later accepted help when her living situation became untenable. This illustrates the ongoing challenges faced by outreach teams, who must build trust and rapport with individuals who have often experienced trauma and instability.

Additionally, the meeting addressed the annual point-in-time count of homeless individuals, which revealed fluctuations in numbers due to seasonal changes. The count, mandated by HUD, is conducted in January, and this year’s data showed a decrease in unsheltered individuals, attributed to colder weather prompting many to seek temporary shelter.

The board acknowledged the vital role of community partnerships, such as those with Better Together and CareerSource, in providing comprehensive support for families in need. These organizations offer recovery programs and job training, helping to empower individuals to improve their circumstances.

As the school board continues to prioritize the needs of homeless students and families, the collaborative efforts among local agencies are crucial in creating a supportive environment that fosters stability and growth.
