Midland County School Board discusses public access to new athletic fields

The Mifflin County School District (MCSD) School Board is moving forward with plans to open its athletic facilities to the public on Sundays, a decision aimed at enhancing community access while ensuring safety and proper management. During the recent board meeting on August 21, 2025, members discussed the logistics and implications of this initiative, emphasizing the need for auxiliary staff to oversee the facilities during public use.

The proposal allows community members to utilize the Marquette Fields for recreational activities, such as walking or casual sports, every Sunday from noon to 5 PM. Board members highlighted the importance of having staff present to mitigate potential liability issues and ensure the facilities are used responsibly. This decision aligns with previous commitments made to the public regarding access to the new athletic complex.

Concerns were raised about the balance between community access and the potential for misuse of the facilities. Board members agreed that while the fields should be open to the public, organized teams should not monopolize the space during designated public hours. The board is considering implementing a system where organized groups can reserve the fields outside of public access times, ensuring that casual users are not displaced.

In addition to the operational plan for Sundays, discussions included the installation of cameras and automated external defibrillators (AEDs) at the facilities to enhance safety measures. The board is also looking into signage to inform the public about rules and regulations, including restrictions on pets and appropriate footwear.
