Shelly Jo Metzger presents Dunn County Therapeutic Community program for inmates

Dunn County's new Therapeutic Community program is making strides in supporting inmates on their recovery journey. Launched in February, the initiative provides a dedicated space within the jail for individuals seeking to overcome substance use issues. Shelly Jo Metzger, the substance use counselor, presented the program's progress during the Dunn County CJCC Quarterly Meeting on August 21, 2025.

The Therapeutic Community operates as a self-guided treatment environment, allowing participants to support one another while engaging in various recovery-focused classes. Currently, the program accommodates 12 male inmates, with a steady increase in participation. Metzger noted that the community fosters a calm atmosphere, contrasting with the typical jail environment, and encourages inmates to take an active role in their recovery.

Participants are required to attend at least one of the 60 available classes each month, with many choosing to engage in multiple sessions. The program also includes peer-led support groups, such as Alcoholics Anonymous meetings, and offers mentoring through local organizations like Roundtable Revival. This mentorship provides inmates with guidance and support as they transition back into the community.

Metzger highlighted the importance of maintaining structure within the program, requiring participants to be active and productive during their time in the community. This includes daily routines such as making their beds and engaging in activities like puzzles or exercise.

The meeting also addressed the expansion of medication-assisted treatment (MAT) options, now including support for alcohol use disorder, which was previously limited to opioid use. This change is expected to significantly benefit the inmate population, as alcohol use is prevalent among those incarcerated.

Overall, the Therapeutic Community program represents a significant step forward in Dunn County's approach to rehabilitation, providing inmates with the tools and support necessary for successful recovery. As the program continues to evolve, it aims to create lasting positive impacts on the lives of participants and the broader community.
