St. Augustine reaches Class 4 status for floodplain management boosting insurance discounts

St. Augustine has achieved a significant milestone in floodplain management, as the city has been upgraded to a Class 4 community by FEMA, resulting in a 30% discount on National Flood Insurance Program (NFIP) policies for residents. This improvement, which comes after a rigorous evaluation process, marks a notable increase from the previous Class 7 rating, reflecting the city’s commitment to effective floodplain management and resilience.

The upgrade was made possible through the diligent efforts of city staff, particularly floodplain coordinator Ray Deshler, who played a crucial role in ensuring compliance with FEMA’s requirements. The city’s successful implementation of the Watershed Master Plan was a key factor in overcoming the challenges that previously hindered this advancement. As a result, St. Augustine will join an elite group of only 25 communities nationwide that hold a Class 4 rating or higher.

The new rating will take effect for policies issued or renewed on or after April 1, 2026, providing substantial savings for homeowners. In addition to the floodplain management update, the city commission discussed the ongoing improvements to Bannon Avenue, which will now be designated as one-way traffic from Court Edna to Court Luis. This decision aims to facilitate drainage improvements while maintaining access to community spaces, such as the neighborhood park and garden.
